5000 to 1

Leicester City

The Barclays English Premier League, a league dominated since 1992 by some of the worlds most renowned football clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and more recently Manchester City. Only in 1994-1995 has an “outsider” won the worlds toughest football league, the Blackburn Rovers.

Now meet the Foxes of Leicester City. Who are they you ask? Led by the Premier Leagues number two goal scorer Jamie Vardy (#9) this was a football club who 12 months ago in April 2015 was at the very bottom of the table and facing relegation to the Championship League. Since then, the Foxes have won more matches and acquired more points than any other English football club. Leicester (pronounced Lester), a preseason 5000 to 1 to win the Premier League, is on the brink of history and arguably the greatest season of any professional sports team ever.

Lets look at some team salaries in nonexistent salary cap of the Premier League. Chelsea is #1 spending £215.6M ($311.3M dollars), #2 is Manchester United for a low price of £203M, and #3 is Manchester City at £193.8M only £1.8 million more than #4 Arsenal. The bottom four teams in the EPL are as followed: #20 Bournemouth £25M ($36M dollars), #19 Watford £29M, #18 Norwich City £37M, and the top of the table Foxes of Leicester City spending £48.2M. Of those listed, only Norwich City is facing relegation with 4 games to go in the season. Going into the season, the top 10 paid players in the Premier League were all on the rosters of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, and reigning champions Chelsea. The highest paid player in the league is Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney (#10) for a price of £260,000 ($375,000) a week. Just recently Leicester City resigned Jamie Vardy for £80,000 ($115,000) a week.

Leicester City has three games remaining on their schedule with a “comfortable” (ask 2013-2014 Liverpool about comfortable lead in May) eight point lead over Tottenham. Note, this article was written before the Monday night football matchup of Tottenham v West Bromwich Albion (2pm CST on NBCSN call your local pub to find out if the match will be on and have a pint). I expect Tottenham, led by the best player in the league 22 year old #10 Harry Kane, to beat West Brom, so lets just say the Foxes have a five point table lead over the Hotspurs. With a five point lead with and available nine points to claim, Leicester can win the league with a win at Manchester United on May 1st and a Tottenham loss against West Brom tomorrow or Chelsea on May 2nd.
Standings
I am rooting for Leicester City to win the championship because this would be refreshing to the world of football. This championship for LCFC would give clubs in different leagues around the world hope that they too can beat top flight clubs who have money to spend on the most expensive players and “buy” championships. However, let’s not forget if Leicester does stumble and does not win the league the current 2nd place Tottenham Hotspurs, owners of a four point lead over 3rd place Manchester City, would win their first English top division championship since 1960-1961. Either way, WHEN we crown the Foxes or Hotspurs there will be an “outsider” champion for the first time since the 1994-1995 Blackburn Rovers.
As the fans of Leicester would say: “WE’RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE!”

Life Goes On

I am sure most of the mixed martial arts world is still in shock with both upsets last night: Miesha Tate choked Holly Holm unconscious and Nate Diaz broke Conor Mcgregor’s grandiose attitude. If you read my post yesterday, you saw me predict Nate to win. I also predicted Miesha to pull off the upset as well but I didn’t post about it, only talked with my friends. From now on, I will give 4 fight picks for every fight and break them down as to why I think they will win. As far as life goes on let’s take a look and break that down.

I was very pleased with how humble Conor was in defeat last night. He understands what this game means and he knows that he’s still the Champion of another division. He’s made a ton of money and will continue to make more as he is only 27 and is just getting into his prime. I do think he needs to stay at 145 and if he does decide to jump he needs to stop at 155 and I think most would agree seeing how he gassed last night. I’m interested to see if Conor fights at UFC 200 and who the opponent will be. I just don’t see any other fight besides Frankie Edgar because let’s be honest, I’m not interested in Jose Aldo getting hurt again. So  Conor…the loss is going to be rough on you but life will go on.

Holly, Holly, Holly…

She knew what to stay away from and she did for most of the fight: Miesha’s wrestling! And boy was it good! To be quite honest, Holly was on her way to winning a UD until she was taken down in the 5th and was finished but again she has everything in front of her. She knows the mistakes she made and one thing I can guarantee, is Greg Jackson will fix it. Holly shocked the world when she absolutely steam rolled Rhonda Rousey and even though she lost to Miesha last night, she will will make her way back to a title shot. She has the best striking in Womens MMA by far and with the help of one of the best camps in the world, life will go on.

I will continue to write posts on different topics and like I said, I will give my picks for the fights so be sure and check back. I am going say my record is 2-0 since starting this blog so we will continue to keep track of that as well. Have a great night!

Wedding Crasher?

imageTonight’s fight between Conor Mcgregor and Nate Diaz is gonna be one for the books so let me say that first. I believe it’s gonna be a war from start to finish. Both men have great standup, both men have great chins, and both men have excellent mind sets. But the name of this post is called “Wedding Crasher” because I believe Conor may be the biggest star in MMA history. He’s confident and let’s face it. The man can flat out bang. He’s got 19 wins and 17 of those come by way of TKO and is currently on a 15 fight win streak. Diaz is no slouch either. The Stockton slugger has excellent boxing with his long range and is one of the best BJJ black belts in MMA. His blackbelt is from Ceasar Gracie (enough said).

So let’s get cracking. It’s no secret Conor has dynamite in that left hand but the fact is its been knocking out featherweights. It’s also no secret that The UFC Brass and Conor have a relationship that’s much like a marriage. If Conor wins tonight I’m sure there’s another big fight waiting for him at UFC 200 in July. But that’s where I think Nate Diaz crashes this wedding. Nates going to pose some real problems for Conor tonight. In Conor’s previous fight he’s been the taller and bigger fighter. Not tonight. I think Nate’s height and reach will keep Conor guessing and the later the fight goes I think it favors Diaz. Diaz may not have the one punch knockout power but he certainly throws enough volume to make your face hurt for a few weeks. Call me crazy but in the end I think Nathan Diaz pulls a Vince Vaughn, walks in to the Octagon and crashes this wedding.
